Text Message Northumbrian Pipers’ Society Events Newsmail - December 2013 Thank you to all who have let us know about their Christmas events and meetings We hope you have some great festive piping and parties! Music Partnership North (Northumberland Music Service) is holding a Festive Performance at the Britannia Hotel, Newcastle Airport, on Saturday 7th December from 7pm (mince pies and mulled wine from 6.30pm). We hope there will be some pipers among them, but there will certainly be some great music from youngsters learning instruments in Northumberland schools. Robson’s Choice are playing to cheer up your Christmas shopping trips, at: The Hearth at Horsley Xmas Fair on Sunday 1st December from 1.30 pm and at Heighley Gate Garden Centre, Morpeth, on Sunday 8th December from 1.30 pm. Salisbury Pipers play in the background on two occasions during the Christmas Tree Festival at St Thomas's Church in High Street, Salisbury (the opposite end from the Cathedral), on Tues 3rd at 10.15 am and on Sunday 8th at 12.45 pm. St Thomas's is a beautiful medieval church with probably the best preserved 'Doom' painting in the country. There will be over 70 decorated Christmas Trees and the atmosphere, with low light and stained glass, is simply beyond description. You just have to be there! They will be playing mainly carols from Derek Hobbs's A Christmas Companion, and lyric sheets will be available for anyone who fancies singing along. More pipers also welcome! Contact: Ian (i.curr@ntlworld.com) who says it’s well worth doing! Newcastle University Folk Degree Course First Year Students are giving a concert at 7.30 pm at St Mary’s Heritage Centre on Thursday 12th December. For a small charge, come and meet some of the newest musical talent around at the start of their performing lives! Robson’s Choice will also be playing for St Oswald’s Light up a Life service, at the Newcastle Arena on Wednesday 18th December from 5pm, commemorating the lives of loved ones. Recent NPS events As we mentioned last month, Richard Heard and Julia Say ran an NPS stall at the Northumberland History Fair at Woodhorn Archives. More about this in the Winter Newsletter, due to be with you in a week or so. News from the Archives In 2012 the archivist offered to the Whitley Bay course a summary of information about the history of piping in North Shields, the home of Robert and James Reid. North Shields was a centre of late C19th piping being the home of several eminent members of the Northumbrian Small-Pipes Society, as well as the home of Will Lamshaw (the younger) when he died in 1806, and fairly certainly a regular haunt of James Allan who is believed to have known, and "rid the Fairs" with, Robert Reid's father. It was well known to Robert Bewick, and one of the four known copies of the Peacock tunebook was owned by someone living in Tynemouth. Knowing that next year (2014) is the 200th anniversary of James' birth, it is hoped to delve further to seek evidence of the vernacular musical history, and particularly the piping history, of the town. If you have any thoughts on this, or can contribute information or evidence, please contact Richard at archivist@northumbrianpipers.org.uk At the NPS Competitions in October the Composition class was won by Bill Wakefield (USA) with his tune The Reiver’s Gallop. The Composition Trophy (made by Colin Ross) has been engraved with his name and a photo sent over to him. Colin, Pam and Julia are seen here with Bill’s trophy and certificate. The tune is below, and if you have the right technology, you can hear it too – just click here: http://soundcloud.com/bill-wakefield/reivers-gallop The Reiver’s Gallop B W Wakefield NPS events in December: NPS Monday session 7.30 pm on Monday 2nd December at the Chantry, Morpeth – led this month by Chris Ormston.
