Northumbrian Pipers’ Society Events newsmail - October 2014

October is Piping Awareness Month!

And we announce our very own beer!

This will be launched and enjoyed at the  NPS Monday Meeting on 6th October, to be held, especially for this occasion, at the Cumberland Arms,James Place Street, Ouseburn, Newcaste Upon Tyne NE6 1LD.

If you can’t be there to celebrate this exceptional occasion, then try to pay a visit to this wonderful music venue next time you’re in Newcastle – it’s definitely a place to experience, in Newcastle’s living heritage area of Ouseburn.

The label is attached, so you know what to ask for if you have a local that stocks Wylam Brewery beers.

Many thanks to Andy May for his selfless devotion to this project!

Celebrate the BUZZ!!  Show the world we are part of a community with a shared passion.

To raise awareness of our beautiful Northumbrian musical heritage, performers, players and enthusiasts alike are invited to send us a picture that celebrates the places and occasions during October where pipes were played. We want everything from the usual and regular to the curious and extraordinary (but, obviously, most especially the curious and extraordinary!). These pictures will be shared on the website gallery, so make sure you have permission to use the photograph!   Send them to webmaster@northumbrianpipers.org.uk please!

PS  We have been assured that it is not possible to take a selfie whilst playing (properly).  Unless you know otherwise?  But of course NPS can’t accept responsibility for any damage, emotional or actual, to pipes, players, environment, buildings or bystanders!

And on 11th October at St Mary’s Heritage Centre, there is a fettling session and beginner’s playing session, as well as the usual session.  Do pass this on to any beginners you know.

And to further celebrate Piping Awareness Month, our Annual Competitions and Annual Concert both take place on Saturday 18th October, the competitions during the day at The Chantry in Morpeth and the Concert at St Mary’s Heritage Centre in the evening.

The competitions will be open at 10.30 am for entries for an 11 am start at the Chantry, Morpeth, and players can enteron the day.  Andrew Davison will judge the playing classes, Andy May will have judged the overseas entries and Julia Say will have judged the composition classes.  NPS President Joyce Quin will be presenting the trophies and there will be a group playing session afterwards if time permits.  Shown below are some of the trophies you could take home – it feels such a waste if these are left sitting in our office because no-one enters to win them, so please consider if you could enter into the spirit of the competition!

And in the evening we have our annual concert, again at St Mary’s Heritage Centre, Gateshead (the church next to the Sage)

In honour of the 200th Anniversary of the birth of James Reid society members will bring together a unique gathering of pipes made by both James and Robert Reid to be heard playing together.

There will also be a display of Reid items collated by Richard Heard from our archives.

If you have Reid pipes, or photos or a story to tell about the Reids, please come along and share them with us for our archives

Northumbria’ Pipe Week 12th – 17th October 2014

see www.northumbriansandpipers.com for costs and full details

The course is designed to be a fairly intensive learning experience on the Northumbrian pipes, spread over 5 days, with opportunity to mix with local pipers, both non-residential and residential participants and others at sessions and concert events. It takes place before the annual NPS concert and the NPS competitions, this year both on 18th October.
It is based in a licensed language school near the centre of Whitley Bay on a quiet road leading to the sea. This is a 2 minutes walk from the nearest Metro station (which connects most of Tyneside, and gives access to national trains and planes). There is some limited car parking at, or very near, the hotel.
Teaching will be in “pipers pitch”(‘F’ ish). We aim to have several group sessions on most days, with a number of tutors available. There will also be a shorter, self programming, themed, session every day in which participants will study two or three tunes, that they are interested in, in more depth, working towards a performance on the Thursday evening.
Three rooms will be available for tuition most of the time, one large (dining room) and three smaller spaces; the dining room is big enough to hold an event for all participants.  In addition there are likely to be sessions on things like maintenance and reed making, history and tradition, repertoire, duet and playing with other instruments, some graded, some suitable for all comers.  There will also be outings and evening events, both on the premises and elsewhere.

Beamish Museum Session at 8pm on the last Wednesday of the month at Home Farm, Beamish Museum: F & G pitch pipes and other instruments welcome.  Dave Shaw  0120 7231474  dave@daveshaw.co.uk

http://www.northumbrianpipers.org.uk/uploads/images/News%20Pics/Beamish.jpg

'The session was in the delightful setting of the farmhouse kitchen in Beamish on the museum site. There was a lovely welcome when I walked in.The fire was burning and the tea and biscuits were a treat. There is the enjoyment of another age experienced in sitting in that kitchen surrounded by the paraphernalia of a bygone age, playing pipes (and other instruments) and the expected amount of musician banter – I am always amazed that when players get together they sometimes even play tunes.  I got my pipes whisked off to be mended, played and heard some new tunes. What more would I want of a session? It will be lovely to see more players there next time, it is a big kitchen and there is certainly room to be filled.'  (Ednie Wilson)

Doesn’t that sound lovely for a cold autumn evening (Pam!)
