Text Message Northumbrian Pipers’ Society events newsmail May 2016 Hear the pipes on Hadrian’s Wall on Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May! A small group of Newcastle University students and staff will be performing songs composed by the emperor Hadrian's court composer, Mesomedes (2nd c AD) at Housesteads Roman Fort on the May Bank Holiday (2 May). The performance will start around 12.30 and last for 20 minutes or so. Three finalists have been selected from scores submitted and will be played through in a public workshop at 2.00pm on 7th May 2016. The winning piece will be performed by Kathryn Tickell and the Side in their concert at St Michael’s Church, Alwinton NE65 7BE on 7th May 2016 at 7.30 pm Other concerts in the Alwinton series include: Apollo Saxophone Quartet - Saturday 28 May, 7.30pm, Fretwork with Simon Callow - Saturday 11 June, 7.30pm in a fascinating project focusing on Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the globe in 1577-80. Subject to availability, the narrator will be Simon Callow. Royal Northern Sinfonia Ensemble - Saturday 25 June 7.30pm players perform a rarely heard arrangement of Sibelius' En Saga, a beguiling work by Sibelius' fellow countryman Einojuhani Rautavaara, and Schubert's wonderful Octet. Do you know any young pipers or folk musicians (aged 14 to 18 on 1 September)? Applications are now open for the National Youth Folk Ensemble! They are looking for talented young instrumentalists who are dedicated to developing as folk musicians and excited about collaborating with others who share their passion! Ensemble members will: ? participate in 4 weeks of intensive residential courses in different parts of England ? receive high quality tuition and guidance from leading folk artists ? develop skills in performance, arrangement, leadership and facilitation ? give public performances Membership is an annual commitment and the first cohort will take part from October 2016 - August 2017. The residential courses will take place in the school holidays: 23 - 28 October 2016 and February, April and August 2017. This is a drop in session on the first Saturday of the month, starting at 11am and running until 1pm. Alnwick Pipers' Society meetings / playing sessions are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except August) in the Farriers Arms, Shilbottle, Alnwick, Northumberland, NE66 2XX starting at 8.00 pm.
