Text Message Northumbrian Pipers’ Society events newsmail – June 2014 Recent events During the Morpeth Gathering in May, one of the very successful events was provided by Julia Say and Chris Ormston when they gave a presentation on the lives and music of the Cloughs of Newsham, whose tunes many of us play without knowing much about them. A number of Clough family members and descendants were there on the day, and if you missed it, you can find our Clough tunebooks and publications on the website. Don’t forget to register there for your discount. Volunteer pipers needed in Northumberland! We have had three requests for volunteer pipers to play occasionally at Northumbrian visitor attractions. Pipers are wanted at the Maritime Centre at Newbiggin by the Sea (on Sundays), at the Old Gaol at Hexham and also at the Chantry Bagpipe Museum in Morpeth. If this appeals to you and you would be willing to offer a little time to play for visitors, explain the pipes and a bit of their history, and enjoy meeting visitors and tourists, to find out more please contact: Julia Say at juliasay@nspipes.co.uk for the Newbiggin opportunity, Danielle Burn at dburn@woodhorn.org.uk to play at the Chantry, Morpeth, and Jannet Goodridge at jgoodridge@woodhorn.org.uk for the Old Gaol, Hexham. In the Archives this month We are immensely grateful to Richard Leach and Barry Say, who have completed the valuable, and really very time-consuming, task of scanning the annual Journals (or Magazines) from 1980 – 1996, and to Mark who has put them on the website, with a link on the front page. I only have copies back to 2008 myself, so have been finding these fascinating, and hope that they give you hours of amusement or recall lots of great memories, depending on how long you’ve been a member! Many thanks, Richard and Barry! Vol 14 from 1993 has a cover picture of the amazing drones made by MH Hodgson which have recently been bequeathed to the Society and may themselves be the subject of a forthcoming Journal article. There is also a scan of the APS and NPS Tribute to Joe Hutton for those of you who haven’t yet seen this. AGM We have had a good response to requests for new committee members – you’ll see their names in the AGM notice arriving with your newsletter during June - but we can always make room for any of you who want to contribute to the Society’s development and would like to influence the services we can offer to members – if this feels like something you would like to do (whether as a member of the Committee or as a volunteer in any other field), please get in touch with any committee member to ask what’s involved. And our Treasurer, Mike, is still hoping someone is able to help with day-to-day book keeping tasks, so if you could help the Society in this way and can manage an excel spreadsheet, please contact him at treasurer@northumbrianpipers.org.uk to find out what’s involved.
