Text Message Northumbrian Pipers’ Society Events newsmail - September 2014 Newsletter news! We’re immensely happy to report that new committee member Richard Taylor has offered to take on the position of newsletter editor, and is now preparing the autumn edition for publication. He can be contacted on newsletter@northumbrianpipers.org.uk If you wish to get the next newsletter, please check that your subs are up to date, and if they aren’t, please get paid up! Information about subs rates and ways of paying is on the website. President’s Day There was a good turnout for this popular event at Warkworth in August. President Joyce welcomed about twenty pipers to the village hall for a great afternoon’s playing. Read all about it in the newsletter – thanks to Maureen for the photo. President’s Piping at the House of Lords President Joyce has also invited members and their guests to join her for piping and light refreshments in the River Room of the House of Lords from 6 – 8 pm on Thursday 11 December. She will also invite members of both Houses of Parliament to hear and meet us, so this is a great chance to spread our music to a potentially new audience, although the Speaker of the House of Lords, Baroness de Souza, told us last year that she knew and liked our pipes, possibly because of our President’s playing at official functions, and she was given a copy of our new CD which we hope she has been enjoying! Names need to be provided to the House of Lords in mid-November, so please let the Secretary know if you would like to attend. Priority will be given to those who were unable to attend last year, but there may be room for all, so please contact Pam at secretary@northumbrianpipers.org.uk if you’d like to go. If you live in the Newcastle area and would be interested in sessions specially exploring music for your chanter’s low notes, please contact Carol Hirst on carol_hirst@hotmail.co.uk And just to help you put faces to some names, here’s one of Maureen’s photos from the recent AGM held in the bar and lounge area at Newbiggin Sailing Club, where we have our office. Left to right: Secretary Pam Horne, Chairman Andrew Davison, President Joyce Quin and Treasurer Mike Evans. There was a good attendance, four new committee members were elected and there was plenty of time left for playing afterwards! Events in September 2014 from the calendar pages of the website (and some reminders for the end of August!) We hope you find something new here, and enjoy your piping this month! 30 August 2014 Bellingham Show Details at www.bellinghamshow.co.uk. There was a lovely welcome when I walked in.The fire was burning and the tea and biscuits were a treat. There is the enjoyment of another age experienced in sitting in that kitchen surrounded by the paraphernalia of a bygone age, playing pipes (and other instruments) and the expected amount of musician banter – I am always amazed that when players get together they sometimes even play tunes. I got my pipes whisked off to be mended, played and heard some new tunes. What more would I want of a session?
