Text Message Northumbrian Pipers’ Society Events newsmail – August 2015 We hope you’re enjoying your summer piping! We certainly enjoyed this concert, advertised last month, especially hearing Gina on Northumbrian smallpipes. She’s currently on the traditional music degree at Newcastle University, so look out for future performances as we’re sure you’ll enjoy them! It’s NPS Pipers’ Day on Saturday 1st August. If you had been planning to join us and didn’t get around to sending in a form, it’s not too late. Please ring us on the mobile numbers below, or email Pam (secretary@northumbrianpipers.org.uk) and confirm you’ll come along – 10 am start at Newbiggin Sailing Club, NE64 6EG - £30 for a full day of piping or join us for the free evening session with bar from about 7.30 pm at the Club (depending on the speed of service at our chosen eating places!) On Sunday 2nd August, the annual Northumbrian Pipers’ Gathering is at Wallington Hall, NE61 4AR, outside in the Courtyard or in the Hall, depending on the weather (see leaflet with your Summer newsletter or the website for further details - tune list in the list of events below.) And on Monday 3 August – devised especially for those making a Piping Weekend of it! Play tunes from the Archives at the NPS Office, Newbiggin Sailing Club NE64 6EG, from 7.30 pm. A session led by Julia Say exploring some unpublished tunes from the NPS Forster Charlton Archives And please note: President’s Day at Warkworth. Our President, Joyce Quin, has booked Warkworth Memorial Hall on 22 August from 2 pm until 5 pm to host her usual Summer President’s Day piping session. This is a lovely, relaxed and friendly occasion, so do please join her if you can. She reports that the Warkworth Flower Show is on that day at the Castle too, so the village will be delightfully busy! This will be held in Newbiggin Sailing Club, NE64 6EG and costs £30 (excluding meals). There are plenty of lunch time options in Newbiggin, and there will also be the option to go for an evening meal (not included in costs). 1 August 2015 St Oswalds Group Pipers Meet at 10.30 am at St Oswald's Hospice, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE3 1EE every Saturday. All piping abilities and instruments in F pitch are welcome. 1 August 2015 Gateshead St Mary’s Playing session St Mary’s Heritage Centre in Gateshead hosts a regular piping session where all abilities are welcome. This friendly playing group shares much loved tunes and learns new ones in the beautiful setting of Gateshead Heritage Centre on the Quayside next to the Sage Gateshead. The session happens on the first Saturday of the month. This is a drop in session starting at 11am and running until 1pm. The players all get to use the space for a small donation of £1 each to the Centre. 1 August 2015 Gateshead Pipemakers Co-op afternoon At St Mary’s Heritage Centre, Gateshead NE8 2AU, following the piping meeting the same morning. This is an excellent venue with great acoustics and has been the Cleveland Branch home for many years now. The December meetings include our annual Christmas meal as well as the usual playaround sessions. If you are in the area do come along and join our friendly group to play or listen to the wide variety of tunes. Everyone, in turn, gets the opportunity to choose the tunes to be played if they wish. 13 August 2015 Spittal Northumbrian Piping Group Berwick (Spittal) Pipers meet at the Blenheim Hotel, Spittal TD15 1RD from 7.30 pm on the second Thursday of the month, at 7.30. Spittal Northumbrian Piping Group

The Cleveland Branch Playing Group meet every 4th Wednesday of the month for practice upstairs at Ceddesfeld Hall, Rectory Row, Sedgefield. TS21 2AE, County Durham at 7pm till about 9pm.

The playing group are a very active group with the aim of taking the Northumbrian Smallpipes and Northumbrian music out to the public. We usually have very busy year and have performed at many events such as festivals, National Garden scheme events, concerts, weddings, schools and fetes.

Pipers are very welcome to join us and play, though tunes and discussions are restricted to the playing group repertoire.
