Text Message Northumbrian Pipers’ Society Events Newsmail November 2013 Please circulate this to your groups - email us to subscribe. --------------------- As this is the first of these newsmails, we include a late October event – this coming Sunday (Sunday 27th October) at the Northumberland Archives at Woodhorn NE63 9YF. Julia Say and Richard Heard will be hosting the NPS stall at the Northumberland History Fair from 11 am – 4 pm, to share with visitors items from NPS archives, the making of pipes and the display of historical photos which the NPS received from David Burleigh. They will be sharing their encyclopaedic knowledge of pipes, pipers and piping, and hoping to collect stories and memories from visitors. Do join them and add your knowledge to our history, try to identify the pipers, buy tunebooks you’ve always wanted! There will be some playing, so bring your pipes along to join in with the audio demonstration! Pipe at the House of Lords! President Joyce Quin is hosting a President’s Day event for NPS members at the House of Lords on Thursday 12 December, from 6 – 8 pm. If you wish to attend this event, confirm with Pam at secretary@northumbrianpipers.org.uk or direct with President Joyce by 10th November, please. Joyce will also give tours of both Houses to pipers and guests during that afternoon, and non-players will be welcome to join us at the evening event if space permits. NPS Monday session 7.30 pm on Monday 4th November at the Chantry, Morpeth – led this month by Adrian Schofield. NPS Saturday session 2.30 pm on Saturday 16th November at the Chantry, Morpeth – to be led by pipers from the Cleveland Branch. NPS activities last month: In October Andy May led an enjoyable Saturday session with a theme of 1850s tunes. Julia brought this one, which was new to us, and we thought we’d share it with you, but as she says...’to be honest, its not a very good pipe tune! There are better, more playable versions, but this is an original from a very interesting MS.’ She prefers this one from the Straffen MS, which only occurs in one other place. I’m sure Julia’s looking forward to your comments on Facebook! The Spotted Bitch James Hill, from the Straffen MS http://www.northumbrianpipers.org.uk/uploads/images/Eventsletter/tunes/nov13/spotted%20bitch.jpg Notes from the Archivist, Richard Heard Work on the archives progresses slowly. Recently a start was made on two medium-term projects: (a) scanning some of pipe-making documentation and drawings, so that members will eventually be able to consult such material easily and quickly, and (b) making photographic copies of original historical photographs with the aim of indexing the images and identifying their subjects, locations, etc and again, making them more accessible. Undoubtedly this sort of work will throw up questions - and even mysteries! - about piping and pipers, and it is hoped to use this sort of mailing, the Newsletter and the NPS website to seek members' assistance in remembering people and events ... and in solving any mysteries. Links to family history researchers outside the Society can be useful, and currently we are in contact with someone researching Robert Nicholson, the young assistant to the ducal piper William Green in the early C19th. The Whitley Bay October piping course isn't a Society event as such, but those who were there are nearly all NPS members. The 2014 course will need more participants booking for the course, and preferably staying in the hotel, if it is to run at all – the ends only just met this year. It’s the only course long enough to attract transatlantic visitors (who this year also came to the Rothbury course) and it’s loss would be a loss to piping. If you’ve been on the course, or would like to contribute to the discussion, please contact Susan at susan@northumbriansandpipers.com or email Julia or Malcolm. . Please note this new session, and support it if you can: Wednesday 30th October and Wednesday 27th November The Beamish Session meets 8pm at Home Farm, Beamish Museum, DH9 0RG: F & G pitch pipes and other instruments welcome. Dave Shaw 0120 7231474 dave@daveshaw.co.uk This session is in a recreated farmhouse kitchen at this wonderful museum of rural and industrial life. Piping like it used to be! If you would like to publicise any event through this email update, please send details early in the month before to Pam at: secretary@northumbrianpipers.org.uk Comments will also be welcome. We are aware that this is a UK (or even Northumbrian) based email, and we’d like to make it useful to other areas too, so do please let us have your information.
