Text Message Northumbrian Pipers’ Society events newsmail – May 2014 Our Monday meetings are becoming quite crowded! In April Lynn Nicholson led a session where we pinned floor maps to show where our chosen tunes came from – some crawling on the floor was involved and geography tested at times! Maureen caught the atmosphere, below, for those who couldn’t be there. We noticed that there were so few tunes from the south of England that a second session was proposed for later, but we enjoyed tunes from (and inspired by) places all over the world and also had a visiting Shetland fiddler to inspire us. Don’t forget Lynn’s new group at Stakeford on Thursday afternoons – see the listings for details of this month’s meeting. The Archivist, Richard Heard, reports that: Work is proceeding with indexing and scanning, but this will be a very long job. I'm trying to prioritise items or information that, in my estimation, are worth making available. At present I am working on the manuscript music of Forster Charlton and some very detailed notes, collated from various sources, on making pipes. I am indexing material as I scan it, and including a very brief descriptor of the scan in the index. The index is in the form of a spreadsheet but will probably be made available in PDF format. I hope the Society will eventually be able to put the index on the website, with intermittent updates as each section of the work is completed. And our archives will be richer for the gift of a copy of the 1967 first edition of Cocks and Bryan which has been offered to us by a bookseller in the south of England. She thought it should return to its home, and we are very grateful for the gift. We have plans to scan it and put it on the website for all to enjoy. Find A Piper Web Page Thank you to those who have given us details for the new web page – please continue to let us know if you are interested in being contacted for piping opportunities around the country - or elsewhere - you never know who might check out the website for a piper! We have a request at the moment for a piper for a wedding at Langley Castle in July – if you might be interested, please contact secretary@northumbrianpipers.co.uk for details. AGM voting paperswill be going out shortly for committee nominations. Committee meetings are held every other month in Newcastle upon Tyne, but Skype is a possibility and the committee email list keeps discussions going between times – talk to any committee member or email Andrew at chairman@northumbrianpipers.org.uk. Please consider what you could contribute to your Society! Thank you to all who’ve sent their annual subscription by standing order, Paypal or cheque: this is much appreciated, and even more so if you’ve been able to sign a UK Gift Aid declaration. There was a lovely welcome when I walked in.The fire was burning and the tea and biscuits were a treat. There is the enjoyment of another age experienced in sitting in that kitchen surrounded by the paraphernalia of a bygone age, playing pipes (and other instruments) and the expected amount of musician banter – I am always amazed that when players get together they sometimes even play tunes. I got my pipes whisked off to be mended, played and heard some new tunes. What more would I want of a session? It will be lovely to see more players there next time, it is a big kitchen and there is certainly room to be filled.'  'The session was in the delightful setting of the farmhouse kitchen in Beamish on the museum site. It will be lovely to see more players there next time, it is a big kitchen and there is certainly room to be filled.'  (Ednie Wilson)
