Source for drone stock tubing

Postby Richard Evans » Mon Nov 14, 2011 9:30 am

Thin walled brass tubing seems to be becoming difficult to obtain at least in some sizes. Smiths Metals have 1.5" x 20 SWG which is OK ( at almost £10/foot) but I'm looking fairly urgently for some 1.75" diameter. Smiths list 1.75 x 22 SWG on the website but it's out of stock and probably not being re-stocked. Holme Dodsworth (Heaton) have nothing thinner than 3mm wall.
Anybody got any suggestions? It looks to me like these thin walled sizes are simply not stocked any more.

Cheers
Richard

Hi Richard

It might be worth contacting

Wellington Tube Supplies Ltd
Parkside House
Rigby Lane
Hayes
Middlesex
UB3 1ET
phone: 020 8230 5708
E-mail: sales@tubesupplies.co.uk

I have sourced tube from them in the past (but not for pipemaking)

Also have you considered using stainless steel tube which is available in a vast range of sizes?

Sorry, don't use anything bigger than 1.5" so can't help directly, but wouldn't the 3mm wall stuff serve if you want to go to that large a diameter?
Smiths is prohibitive in small quantities - of anything.

I presume it's for Border pipes or a multi-drone set up?

I use this size for 4 drone SSP and BP. The 3mm wall is much too thick/heavy- and expensive- even 1.5" by 20 swg (0.9mm) is £10/foot in a 12' length.
I have tracked down about one foot of the stuff in a model engineering shop, enough for 6 sets, but I'd much rather have a decent quantity.

THanks for the contact, I'll look into it. I think brass is part of the aesthetic- don't really fancy stainless steel.

This firm had some in stock- I have ordered a couple of metres- at £55 per metre!!!, by the time delivery and a card surcharge are added. Enough to make your eyes water! However, that will set me up for a few years.
Thanks again Mike.

David Daye, an uilleann pipe maker in the US, gets his thick walled tubing from here:

Hope this helps.

The tubing arrived 24hrs after ordering-very well wrapped- expensive but a good service.
