Old bags

I have acquired an old bag which seems to have been treated with vaseline (?) - a lost drone reed has come out very sticky but clear! The treatment is very thick in the bag and makes it v stiff when inflated. Anybody had this problem before, and any advice as to how to remove the 'treatment'? Malcolm

Hi Malcolm,

Have you tried blowing it up and seeing if it leaks? Usually (hopefully) people only apply tons of seasoning to bags that leak anyway. I've come across many old bags seasoned with all kinds of curious mixtures - i heard that Bill Hedworth at one time took to treating bags with waxoyle which over time tended to rot the leather, while i've seen some of Tom Clough's seasoning which looks like a mixture of tar and axle fat!

My point really is that there's a decent chance the bag is shot anyway.

But if it is vaseline then you ought to be able to remove at least some of it by warming the bag and then squeezing it out from one end.
