Apparently musicians aren't very good at telling what a wind instrument is made of, if they're listening blind.
But they can often recognise silver flutes.
The player is an important factor in the sound too.
I knew someone who could play a metal Boehm flute so it sounded like a wooden unkeyed one.

I don't know what a Cheddar chanter sounds like....

The original, possibly naive quote was mine. Maybe I am sensing the vibration of the air column rather than the wood. However, having focused on the sensations under the fingertips I have now noticed that when playing a low D I can feel vibration in the key-touch of that key. I don't think the rush of air through the D hole is strong enough to cause this. Over to the physicists......

I'm a lapsed physicist now, but it is conceivable that a hollow length of blackwood, the dimensions of a chanter,
would, if driven by pressure variations inside, have a 'bulging' mode at a pitch in a similar range to the pitch that the chanter actually plays.
If so, you would get a note, maybe several, where the air column resonates with the body.
Checking this needs an experimental physicist though, and I was always a theoretician.
I left a trail of broken kit in labs to prove it....

I could suggest a rig to test it, maybe.
A chanter, with the holes stopped, a sound source at one end, where the reed would be,
and a mic in contact with the outside to measure the body vibrations.
Vary the frequency of the source, and plot the response curve.
Also -this bit is important - let me nowhere near it.

Maybe the ideal body frequency is low G?
It might mess up the hole spacings though.

Only in F#, have I felt these vibrations. Certainly not G.

I have to agree with Adrian - whatever the science, the experience of chanter and drones singing perfectly together, with that resonance from the chanter, is a wonderful experience. Elsewhere Paddy Keenan described the sound of my pipes as being "Like a hive of bees". They certainly have me buzzing.

This resonance is certainly likely to be specific to one note;
that note will depend on the dimensions of the chanter,
including the thickness of the wall - thin walls will be much more compliant.
If the resonance isn't on a note of the chanter scale, you'll never hear it.
Ideally it should be the tonic.

For my new G chanter, my ivory F# chanter was measured across it's width, as if it was a simple chanter. It was 7/16" at lower end and slightly less at he top. It is interesting that 7/16 " is standard for for the diameter around the arc of an F-reed. I wonder if it will vibrate?
