April 2012 Tune of the Month: Morpeth Rant

Ian Lawther selected April's Tune of the Month: Morpeth Rant. This is a great tune that doesn't get played as much as it deserves, at least in my experience. Matt Seattle devoted a whole book to the tune. There are lots of different settings available. It's the first TOTM, iirc, that is in D.

If you, like me, have been working on previous TOTMs (Adam a Bell hasn't come very easily to these old fingers), don't worry. There is no deadline. Post them when you're ready.

All the best,
John

Joe Hutton's version, arranged by Margaret Watchorn. Experimental self-duet recording:

I'm surprised this months tune hasn't attracted more attempts. After Edrics great duet version based on Joe Huttons playing, my attempt is based on Billy Piggs so I've chosen to pair it up with his own hornpipe.

Ian Lawther posted this four part setting:

And here's a very clever setting for nine notes by Pete Stewart:

I had better get mine done!

Here's my offering for the month:

The tune may not work very well as a jig, but it was an interesting project.
