Octobrer 2013 TOTM: The Shepherds

Postby Dally » Tue Oct 01, 2013 11:18 pm

October 2013 TOTM: The Shepherds. The Shepherds were Joe Hutton, Willie Taylor and Will Atkinson. The two Wills composed some simply fantastic tunes, while Joe is remembered for his simple, pleasing, rhythmic style. If you need help identifying tunes take a look at the Alnwick Pipers Society Collections and the NPS Tune Book II. Wikipedia has articles on each individual. There are recordings on the FARNE web site.
Reading this space for while now I've become vaguely aware of some controversy about The Shepherds, so if you prefer to avoid their music remember Francis Wood requested a "keyless sticky" for TOTM.

A bit late this reply. I attended Joe's Rothbury piping course in late 80's early 90's but only saw the Shepherds play for dancing once, at Sidmouth Folk Festival 1992, a tour organised by Alistair Anderson. Below is a list I have of their dance sets (with key and dance where known) but I have no recollection the origin of the document. Perhaps I compiled it, perhaps they gave a workshop? Maybe somebody else recalls? The only other memory I have of that time was finding Willy Taylor on the edge of Sidmouth walking out of town. He was totally lost, so I gave him a lift back to the centre where he was due to give a fiddle workshop.
